MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama House voted Tuesday to require children to attend school or be home schooled at the age of 6.

The House voted 58-30 for the bill that changes the mandatory age when children must attend school in Alabama to 6 from 7, but it was amended to allow parents to request in writing to their local school board to allow a child to wait until age 7.

Police said they were interviewing the parents to determine if they will face charges in a shooting that injured three students at Ross Elementary in northeast Houston, Local 2 Investigates reported Tuesday.\ Houston Independent School District Chief Elementary Officer Sam Sarabia said a 6-year-old brought a loaded gun to school, and when it fell from his pocket, it fired one shot.He said the boy who brought the weapon was apparently shot in the leg, while a 6-year-old boy and a 5-year-old female classmate were injured by debris from the gunshot.”We will take the appropriate, necessary steps,” said Sarabia.He said the child would likely be moved to a disciplinary alternative education campus that is available for elementary kids who bring weapons to school or cause other problems.Tearful parents rushed to the school as news of the shooting spread.
