The huge educational lapses in Nigeria is fast becoming an issue of major concern especially as it relates to girl child education in Nigeria. Unfortunately, the reality of the situation goes against most claims made by various arms of government, especially those at the grassroots level, which in most obvious cases accommodate the majority of the Nigerian child.

The 1948 universal declaration of Human Right provides the first international recognition of the right to education when it stated that, “everyone has the right to education.” More so, chapter four of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and various other sections of the constitution frown against discrimination of any type.

The girl child right to education is an economic, social and cultural right, as well as a civil and political right since people cannot fully realize their freedoms without education. Like all human rights, the context of girls’ right to education can be found in our local legislations and international commitments. Despite all this, the girl child still bears the double jeopardy she suffers first as a child then the discrimination that comes as a result of being a girl child.

Akwamu Queenmothers Association Embarks On Girl-Child Education

Like the scripture underlined in the book of Proverbs 22:6 that train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it, the Akwamu Queenmothers Association (AQMA) has embarked on a tour in the Akwamu Traditional Area to educate the girl-child on reproductive health.

Speaking at the maiden tour at the Akwamu Presbyterian Junior High School (JHS) and Basic Schools last Thursday, the Queenmother of the Traditional Area, and also Chairperson of the Association, said the association decided to champion the campaign, following the rate of teenage pregnancy, abortions and school drop-outs that had characterised the activities of the children in the area in recent times.

According to NanaAframkomah II, irresponsible parenthood, coupled with indiscipline among the girl-child had made the situation a huge task.

She explained that, a properly trained child would fear God and live a wise and righteous life as an adult. On the other hand, an untrained child would not fear God or live a wise and righteous life as an adult.

Nana Aframkomah II reiterated that slothful parents hunt for special methods to train their children, thus, always looking, reading, buying books, and attending seminars, but they are not training.
