A Look at Georgia Charter School Amendment on Tuesday’s Ballot
News from WSAV-TV:

(Savannah, GA) It’s an issue that likely interests every parent out there. It’s your child’s education. Tuesday’s election includes a ballot issue you may want to know more about. Called Amendment #1, it would amend Georgia’s constitution to allow the creation of a new state commission that would approve charter schools.

So does that mean we don’t have charter schools now? No.  The state of Georgia has more than 130 charter schools currently operating.  What the ballot measure does is offer what supporters say is a “third” option to allow charter school applicants to get a school approved.

“It’s another opportunity for parents to have choice in our schools,” says state Senator Buddy Cater (republican from Pooler.)

While supporters say the amendment means more choice, opponents argue it muddies the water on local control and how your tax dollars may be spent.

A few facts:

First, charter schools are considered public schools.  They’re not operated by district personnel but they do get district money.

The funding formula is somewhat different and charter schools often don’t have to adhere to all the rules that traditional schools must follow.  Yet tax dollars are given to charter schools on a per pupil allotment that normally cannot be less than what a traditional school receives for serving the same kind of students.
