Former Westminster High Teacher Selected as High School Technology …

Each year, a high school technology education teacher in the state of Maryland who best demonstrates excellence in technology education is awarded the High School Technology Education Teacher Excellence Award. This year, the Technology & Engineering Education Association of Maryland (TEEAM) announced that the award goes to Jim Deitrich, a teacher at Liberty High School.

Deitrich taught for 12 years at Westminster High School and has now been teaching Technology Education at Liberty High School for the past eight years.

In these 20 years that Deitrich has been teaching technology education in Carroll County, he has contributed to state and national curriculum development and is a trainer for the International Technology and Engineering Educator’s Association’s (ITEEA) Foundations of Technology curriculum. DCSB hears the high school literacy plan

Literacy coach Patti Smith informed the school board Thursday night that the culture at the high is changing towards reading thanks to the reading time built into their schedule after lunch each day.

“We have completely flip-flopped the school’s culture towards reading,” Smith said. “Thanks to our leadership and encouragement.”

Since the beginning of the current school year, the students in the high school and middle school have begun reading for 20 minutes each day. Regardless of what class a student has at that time of the day, they are reading for 20 minutes.

Smith told the board the reading time allows the students to practice their reading skills so they can perform well on the literacy benchmark test.

“Before we started this, I’d ask students if they were reading books, and they’d say no, but now I have student coming up to me saying, Mrs. Smith, I’m reading a book,” Smith said. “It’s so exciting.”

Smith isn’t the only faculty member to see a change.

Kim Greer, director of instruction and cheerleader coach, said she has to tell her cheerleaders to put their books down so they can get out on the floor and cheer.
