SINGAPORE: Nearly all Singaporean parents want their children to get a university education — that is what a recent survey “The Value of Education: Springboard for Success”, conducted by HSBC showed.

However, many parents do not start saving up early enough for their child’s university fees.

In Asia, 90 per cent of parents surveyed said they want their children to go to university. In Singapore, it is 92 per cent.

67 per cent of Singaporean parents want their children to get a postgraduate degree, while 82 per cent of them will consider sending their children to universities abroad.

The global survey was conducted online between December 2013 and January 2014. It involved more than 4,500 parents in 15 countries and territories such as Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. In Singapore, 309 parents were surveyed.

Those surveyed had at least one child under the age of 23, who is already attending school.

The survey also found that 49 per cent of these parents do not start saving early enough for their child’s education — on average, they take about five years to do so.
