The U.S. Department of Education reaffirmed its position of welcoming new immigrant children to the classrooms. Based on data from the DOE, more than 840,000 immigrant students were in the U.S., with over 4.6 million learning English.

“We have begun to receive inquiries regarding educational services for a specific group of immigrant children who have been in the news — children from Central America who have recently crossed the U.S.-Mexico border,” the DOE stated. It published a Fact Sheet on states and local education agencies’ responsibilities to provide existing resources for immigrant students.

Whether students have spent time at home reading or at the library taking AR tests or participating in one of the many Tahoe Truckee Reads summer reading programs, studies prove reading over the summer break can get kids off to a great start in the new school year.

This summer, hundreds of students throughout Tahoe Truckee Unified School District participated in neighborhood-based reading programs led by teachers and volunteers. Many more attended the K-Camp and Summer Scholars programs for elementary aged students and the Aim High program for middle school students.

These initiatives are part of the nationally recognized plan to improve grade-level literacy by the end of third grade, supported in collaboration with TTUSD and the Excellence in Education Foundation.
