And this is where schools have a vital role to play – whether it’s giving children the opportunity to take part in activities that build character and resilience such as team sports or Duke of Edinburgh, or knowing when and how to spot the signs of potential mental health problems, so every child can get the support that they need as soon as possible. This isn’t just essential for a child’s education; it’s essential for that child’s whole life.
The Department for Education is already taking significant action to help schools do this. Our behaviour guidance – announced in June – is designed to help teachers spot the difference between bad behaviour and underlying mental health problems – stopping children being wrongly labelled as troublemakers and making sure that they are given help and support instead.
On top of this, our wide-ranging Special Educational Needs and disability reforms provide increased support to the most vulnerable young people in society.
