Local boards to encourage more college attendance

At a recent joint meeting of the school board and county commissioners, Commissioner Chairman Michael Page wondered if more could be done to encourage students who are not considered academic stars to attend college.

Page, who is leading the local “My Brother’s Keeper,” a White House initiative to encourage communities to create strategies to help all young men reach their full potential in college or career paths, said he knows that guidance counselors at high schools are working hard and have large caseloads, but he thinks more needs to be done to encourage kids who might be academically border line to give college a try.

“So many of our students could be potential college attendees, they really are not made of aware of the opportunities,” Page said. “These students could be our future, I wish there was some way we could let them know about the opportunities that are out there.”

Page noted that many local scholarships have few applicants either because students are unaware of them or don’t think they qualify.

“This is really money that they could use to go to school,” Page said.

He said Durham needs a community effort, particularly when it comes to male students of color, to encourage them to look at education beyond high school.
