Still only 40, Sarkisian already had been a head coach at Washington for five seasons before returning to Troy. He led the Trojans to wins at Stanford and Arizona in his first season back, but a heartbreaking loss to Arizona State and a beatdown by crosstown rival UCLA left USC barely inside the Top 25 for bowl season. Before taking the Washington job, where Sarkisian went 34-29, he was USC’s assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach from 2005 to ’08, and offensive coordinator the last of those two seasons. He quarterbacked BYU in the 1990s.

Player to watch

Defensive tackle Leonard Williams: 71 tackles, 8½ tackles for loss (six sacks), three pass breakups. The junior defensive end likely will be playing his final game as a Trojan, with the temptation of being a first-round draft pick probably pulling him to the NFL before his senior season.
